WESTON WARRIORS KICKBOXING TITLE DOUBLE
Event: 29/11/2008
Warrior Gym and WAMA (Weston Academy of Martial Arts and boxing) hosted Fightclub Elite at Hutton Moor sports centre on the 29th November. The show consisted of Pro Kickboxing, Pro MMA and low kick kickboxing. There were two British titles and 5 South West area titles in Kickboxing. There were fighters from all over the country at the event and it was a great night of professional fighting which was supported fantastically by a sell out crowd. Fighters from Weston Warriors kickboxing club featured in four bouts including Matt Martin fighting a weight up for the vacant British title at 81.5kg, Paul Healy and Adam Kellaway both fighting for South West area titles. Dave Disney also represented the club in his third Pro kickboxing fight.
First up was Dave Disney, Dave was back in the ring against a tough fighter and had to really dig in to get into the fight. The first round saw Dave on the back foot and struggle to stay in the fight, Stuart Davies, Dave’s trainer had to get his fighter back on track with a stiff talking to at the end of the first round. The second round was a big difference with Dave winning the round and really showing what he was made of true grit and determination. The third round was even with the fight going to the away fighter.
Adam Kellaway was next up from the Weston club and what a fight. Five rounds of dynamic kickboxing. Adam (18 years) faced a tough fighter from Bath called Grant Harris. Grant, in his early twenties, an extremely tough competitor thought he had the fight won after the first round but Adam really worked hard to win the following three rounds. Adam won the contest on points and claimed the area title belt. It was a great fight and the crowd really got behind both fighters.
Matt martin entered the ring to a great applause and new he faced a tough fighter in Nigel Thomas from London. The vacant title was there for the taking and Matt did not fight to his potential and had a bad day at the office as it were. Nigel worked hard but was always on the back foot. The fight went the distance and was a split decision with one point in it going to Nigel Thomas. The fight was a close call but the Weston fighter thought he had done enough and so did most of the crowd. There will be a rematch as the fight was so close. This will be on the 28th February at Fightclub, win or lose Matt will be moving back down to 75-78kg max his preferred weight.
Paul Healy was last up from the club and again had a great fight to clinch the South West ISKA area title over five rounds. This again was a well matched fight and both fighters gave it their all. Paul got cut above the left eye in the second round and caused the corner to worry. The cut was attended to and Paul finished the fight with some great punch combinations in the last round which rocked his opponent. Stuart Davies club owner and trainer said
The fighters from the club were amazing tonight and I thought Dave Disney was outstanding to come back after taking heavy shots in the first round. Adam and Paul, well they are true Warriors and I am over the moon with the guys they deserve it, they both help teach and bring on all the students at the club and you won’t find nicer guys, they are a credit to the club! My heart goes out to Matt as he fought a great fight and definitely won the battle but did not get the result. We will put that right come February and then Matt will be fighting at his true weight from then on.
I would just like to thank all the fighters and spectators for supporting the show and making it such a great success.
